WAKE UP - A2 - MUSIC VIDEO. (ANALYSIS)

This music video is about a young boy, who looks to be in his early 20's, trying to get a job and also aiming to go on a holiday in order to kick back and have a relaxing time. We see him brushing his teeth and getting changed into a smart attire... black office trousers, white collared shirt, black tie and black office shoes.
The pivotal moment of the music video is when we see him come out of the jobcentreplus building, whilst holding a couple sheets of paper stating "APPLICATION DENIED" at the very top of the first page. His reaction to this turns into a tantrum, as we see him scrunch the papers up in frustration, throwing them to the ground and running off at speed on the pavement, an ally way, a park, and then eventually onto the beach and into the water with his shirts unbuttoned. From the very point he reached to the beach, it was evident that he wants to get somewhere... During the beginning of the music video, he had a framed picture of a swimming pool at some resort. This was a signifier that he would like to reach there somehow.

We then see him dunk his whole body under water whilst holding his breath and then swimming after a little while. We see him again, but this time he rises out the water in a completely different location... (a more beautiful sea / lake with large cliffs) He approaches shore, taking his shirt and trouser off, and walking the distance in only his boxer shorts. A POV shot is shown of him surfing whilst holding on to a handle attached to a speed boat via a rope.
By now, we get the idea of how he wants to enjoy life, and how he's on a mission to explore, have fun and be stress free. After a while, we see a long shot of him looking over at the view from the top of a cliff, and are subsequently followed by a pan shot of the location with him sitting in a sunbed chair. We see 2 more POV shots with him holding an iPad in front of the pool, and then reading a book in front of a pool.

For both of these occasions, he was still on the sunbed. A long shot is then shown of the same image that he was looking at in his bedroom, but this time he is seen sitting facing his back to the camera, rather than the picture being just a pool itself without him being there.
Another POV shot is shown of him catching a rugby ball whilst in the pool, then throwing one back as well. He then takes a short swim in the pool later on.
As he had ended up in a different location previously by going under water, he has done the same thing now, by going under the resort swimming pool water, and ending up in the sea by the side of a boat. A POV shot of him is shown rowing a boat, and then a few more POV shots of him receiving 5 plates of hot cooked meals on a plate.

More POV footage is shown of him climbing a cliff and finally a followed by a low angle shot of him diving into the sea mid air and eventually reaching an electronic speed boat. Another POV shot is shown of him controlling the boat and then riding a cycle in a different POV shot on the road. We then witness him doing more surfing and swimming until he comes out of the water, and finds himself back to the first beach he started at in his area. Whilst walking out of the sea and stepping on to the rocky shore, he looks at his watch with a shocked facial expression. We then see him sleeping in bed just like the first time we were introduced to him, again stopping his alarm clock, but this time looking at the same picture, but with himself in the picture this time. Presumably, all his activities were done in one day, hence why he woke up looking and touching at his framed picture.

After 1 minute 3 seconds of slow editing, most of the rest of the and the ENTIRE music video is very fast and really compliments the beat, tune and style of the music. Very vague shots of continuity editing were used but non-continuity editing was used much more, as the shots for editing were more sharper, quicker, abrupt but more satisfying. Simple cuts were used and also cutaway shots which show the audience what is relevant and what is important to show.
Overall the pace and rhythm of the shots were fast, but when a long shot is shown... E.G. when showing the location, the pace is much slower as it provides us with an opportunity to observe and identify what we are actually looking at. This adds more emphasis and brings out emotions. On the other hand, the pace and rhythm increases heavily as something exciting, exhilarating and rapid is going on on the screen... such as surfing, the electronic speed boat and running at speed. This all builds up the tension and excitement. The medium shots show realism.

The transitioning from under water to coming out of the water was very interesting as there were 3 location changes, all with rapid and quick cuts / transitions. Special effects were not used in this video, apart from the song name at the beginning of the song. (in words) This music video did not need special effects as the natural approach to it and simplicity of it was extremely successful and of top quality.
For the colourisation, I could see a very light and soft baby blue tint. Colourisation was not that of an important aspect in this music video. There is a lot of natural lighting and the entire music video has high key bright lighting / natural lighting which adds to the realism and verisimilitude of the music video on a entire new level.
The diegetic sound that was heard was the sound of the water when the camera went under water, and the non-digetic sound was the music itself with a few lyrics.
For the shot duration, the long shots had lasted for about 3,4 seconds or more and the quick shots such as the mid shots would only last 1 or 2 seconds as the action is more fast and rapid.
For the costumes, the young boy was only wearing his smart attire alongside his swimming shorts.
The performance just consisted of activities such as surfing, diving, boasting, swimming, cycling, climbing and a few more. These are very out door type activities which was the highlights of this music video for content.
Of course as this young boy is the ONLY character in the music video... he has gotten the most screen time, which is then followed by the locations itself which have second place for the screen time.

The props consist of:
  1. Alarm clock
  2. Tooth brush
  3. Cycle
  4. Photo frame
  5. Job sheet
  6. Surf set
  7. Speed boat
  8. Chair
  9. iPad
  10. Book
  11. Rowing stick
  12. Plates of food
  13. Watch
These were vital in order to show what he is getting up to.

The camera shots consist of:
  1. High angle shots
  2. Low angle shots
  3. Close ups
  4. Mid shots
  5. Big close ups
  6. Establishing shot
  7. Panning
  8. Wide shots
  9. Long shots
  10. Inwards zoom shots
  11. POV shots
In my opinion, I believe that the POV shots were the most effective type of shot used, as it allowed us to view what the young boy is viewing himself. I also really liked the long shots as they really set the scene and atmosphere.

Overall, I'd say that this music video is very well constructed, has a variety of camera shots, props and is quite action packed. To make the music video even better, I would have liked to see at least 1 more costume change. I would give this music video a strong 10 out of 10. This is definitely my favourite A level music video.

DUA LIPA - NEW RULES - OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO. (ANALYSIS)

This music video is extremely meaningful, hence why it is easy for the audience to figure out what the music video is about, just by observing the visual performance and how they flow with the lyrics. This is another music video I really like.
Ian Kirkpatrick is the songwriter of the song, as well as Caroline Ailin and Emily Warren. The director of the song was Henry Scholfield and Dua Lipa is and English singer, who is the singer of this song... New Rules. EDM, Tropical house and electropop is the genre of this music video. It was filmed in the USA, Miami, Florida.
The moral of this music video and the reasoning behind it (from Dua Lipa's view) is how you should keep your distance from someone who is bad for you. She had recently said in an interview with the BBC that "I'm setting some rules down so that I won't go back to that person."
Lipa's main verse of the song is...
"One: Don't pick up the phone, you know he's only calling 'cause he's drunk and alone.
Two: Don't let him in, you'll have to kick him out again.
Three: Don't be his friend, you know you're gonna wake up in his bed in the morning. And if you're under him, you ain't getting over him!"

EDITING:
I really enjoy the use of the continuity editing at the very beginning of the music video. (and also used throughout) The amazing aspect of the continuity editing which is really beneficial, is that the neat cutting enables a continuous and clear narrative action by following a set of rules.

  • The rules for the continuity editing consist of the establishing shot, shot / reverse shot, 180 degree rule, 30 degree rule, cross cutting, match on action, eye line match and also the re-establishing shot.
  • These shots were vital to have in order to emphasise the smooth and coherent transitions between the shots, which look invisible.

Personally, I find that it was easy to point out that the narrative has a structure, the shot sequences flow very seamlessly into each other, and also it makes it more simple to watch the music video on a whole new level, whilst being able to understand the lyrics and situation. My favourite part of the editing is when Dua Lipa can be seen inside her hotel room, drawing the curtains, but once the curtains are being opened up, she (and her friends) are outside in the pool area. Whilst Dua Lipa was in her room, we see her hair opened up loose, her black and silver high heeled shoes, her purple baggy collared shirt with a black bra and a shiny mini skirt. However, as soon as we see a mid-shot of her outside in the pool area, her look has transformed to silky tied up hair, orange / yellow tinted sun glasses, golden neck chain, a light blue patterned shirt with her black bra, and also a black mini skirt with red laced high heels. Her physical appearance has completely changed, which has ultimately had an influence on how she acts. She is seen to be a more rebellious character, setting new rules for herself, whilst strutting away in front of the pool. Overall, the editing for this music video is very seamless, as it flows well with the beat. It runs at a moderate medium pace and is absolutely delectable and engaging.

COLOURISATION:
The colourisation in this music video is highly - lit, from the  beginning to the end. In the hotel scenes, the main source of light are the actual light bulbs, lamp shades and also the use of making skin tones and colour of the clothes brighter and more richer via editing. From the first 15 seconds to 35 seconds, Lipa's bedroom has very high lighting, but as soon as she gets up and walks to the bathroom in front of her, the lights rapidly die down. Whilst she was in the bathroom, I could see that her bedroom had very low-key lighting. As she had came back in to her room, the lighting instantly increased and it was back to the usual highly-lit.This may be because her presence in the room brings a joyous and bright feel to the room. The first 12 seconds of the video were just showing us the location, which had low-key lighting (night scene) with Dua Lipa's name and song name is seen in the middle of the screen in illuminated bright white lighting. At 10 and 11 seconds, wee see a flashy bright red tint on the 2 swans and the hotel like party mansion. We also see crisp white lights on the barks of the palm trees. This could be reflective whilst shooting.
At exactly 2 minutes 7 seconds we finally get to see Lipa and her girl friends outside in the open. The lighting has become even more brighter as there is natural light coming in from the sun. I felt that the natural lighting is the best type of lighting that suits this music video because it really brings a glow on their faces, alongside some natural sense, increasing the realism and the verisimilitude of the location and setting.

SPECIAL EFFECTS:
These were outstanding, as they had added more depth to the situation and visuals. We see Dua Lipa's name and her song name illuminated in a bright white neon light at the first long shot of the video.(showing the location and area at the same time) We see a red neon tint at 10 and 11 seconds. This could tell us that there might be a party holding later on in the music video, as the mood changes. The other type of special effect we see is when her location, physical appearance and attitude to her situation all change completely, as she is opening up the curtains. To an extent we are able to see a before and after shot of her. At 2 minutes 20 seconds, the camera goes down in and under the pool, showing us a flipped over (upside down) shot of the platform Dua Lipa is standing on. (with her friends) Before this, herself and all her friends were keeping a still position and as soon as the camera rises from below the swimming pool, they all walk towards each other, forming a line between one another. The second part to this swimming pool scene is where Dua Lipa and her friends are seen to be walking on the swimming pool. Ripple effects are shown every time a step is taken. They all take a moment to stand on the water, but eventually systemically all except Dua, fall in to the pool sideways, splashing about. Almost instantly, that particular shot and shots before, were all reversed. As soon as they fell in to the water, themselves and the water all rose up to their starting position. The final shot shows the camera going under water again ( but 180 degrees) showing them standing before and then disappearing after.

PACE AND RHYTHM:
The pace tends to vary, but seems to remain constant when there are high intensity scenes, compared to the not very intense scenes. At the beginning of the music video we see that the beat is quite slow, hence why we see more long shots, close ups and extreme close ups of Dua Lipa. This enables us to catch and read her facial expressions and body language for a longer period of time. The first 50 seconds are slow, equating to a slow pace and a slow rhythm. At exactly 51 seconds, the beat, rhythm, tune, and pace has drastically increased. This is evident as Dua Lipa's facial expressions and body language as well as her friends become more abrupt, with a bit more enthusiasm. Therefore, we are able to identify that the pace and rhythm adopt and adapt to the on screen visuals. As this is a song about break up, we see that Dua Lipa has a sluggish body attitude, which reflects on the pace and rhythm being slow. However, as she comes to realisation that she has to let go of her past and forget about her previous relationship, she begins to appear more confident in herself, which is shown through her body language, and also in the increase speed of the tune and beat of the song, as well as the performance of Dua and her friends. The pace and rhythm increases and decreases throughout the entire music video.

DIEGETIC AND NON-DIEGETIC SOUND:
We hear Dua Lipa's voice on screen which is clearly visible to us, and is the diegetic sound. For the digetic sound, Dua Lipa had also lip-synced parts of her song. The non-diegetic sound is the music... The beat and the tune itself. Dua's voice really changed accordingly to the song. (At some points, high pitch and also low pitch)

TRANSITIONING: The main transition shot was seen when Dua Lipa had opened the curtain in her hotel room, which was then followed by another transition shot of Dua opening another curtain, which was being opened outside of the pool. The other clever transition was when the camera was under the pool, and then showed Dua and her 8 girl friends all dancing. The shot before this showed them disappeared at the same location, and the shot before that had showed them as still, but striking a pose.

SHOT DURATION AND SCREEN TIME:
Dua Lipa had the most screen time out of everyone on set, as she is the main singer, and also because she is telling her story. She is the backbone of the music video, hence why she is able to explain her situation very cleverly via her words and actions. Her 8 friends had less screen time than Dua, as they were only helping and guiding Dua. The longest shot which was a long shot, had lasted 8 seconds. This was when Dua was sitting on her bed at the beginning of the music video, with only 2 of her friends. The shot duration time limit tends o decrease as the pace and rhythm of the music increase. The shots are cut much quicker... At 2 minutes 47 seconds, we see a close up / eye line shot only lasting 2 seconds. Especially towards the end of the music video, the shots are taken much quicker, due to Dua and her group of girls dancing and performing at a higher intensity, showcasing different dance moves.

PERFORMANCE:
Despite there being an amazing narrative, this music video is filled with performance. This is something that I really enjoy to watch. In terms of dancing and showcasing numerous dance moves, they were very well rehearsed and well choreographed. At 3 minutes 1 second we see an amazing dance scene of synchronised dancing, which shows Dua and her friends all participating. There is also quite a few parts of natural movement as Dua is getting up to sit on her sofa, to open the door and just walking about. The main aspect of this is that it is arranged very well. Throughout the whole music video, the girls are always together as a group. For the first 1 minute 9 seconds we see Dua Lipa walking up to her friends in her room, whilst seeking advice about her self and her relationship and learning it. After this we have an interval of dancing in the hotel passage outside Dua's room. At 3 minutes 24 seconds, we see Dua and her friends holding hands in a circle, and all pulling in together beat by beat. This shows how they all support each other. At 3 minutes 27 seconds we see Dua and her friends saying "Don't let him in", which shows that they are giving advice to one another on keeping your ex boyfriend out of your life.
At 1 minute 26 seconds we see Dua and her friends helping on another glamour

CAMERA SHOTS:
A various number of camera shots were used. These shots consist of...

  1. Long shots
  2. Close ups
  3. Establishing shots
  4. Panning
  5. Wide shots
  6. Mid shots
  7. Eye line match
  8. Master shot
  9. Two shot
  10. Big close up
  11. Long continuous shots
  12. Out zoom shot
The mixture of shots had worked really well, ultimately complimenting one another. The main shot of this music video was the long continuous shots, where everything was flowing smoothly. An establishing shot was shown at the very start of the music video, showing the location, name of the song and of course, the singer... Dua Lipa. A panning shot was used to show the entrance of the hotel, then leading to a wide shot, showing the rest of the hotel area. A mid shot was shown of the flamingos which could be seen as a welcoming sign for the audience to come on the journey and actually enter the hotel. A close up was shown of Dua Lipa's face and also an extreme close up of her lips. This allows us to deeply observe her facial expressions, feeling and emotions for added emphasis.

PROPS:
The props used in this music video consists of:
  1. Sun glasses
  2. Jewellery
  3. Huge mirror in the bathroom
  4. Classic pick up telephone
  5. Hairbrushes
  6. Lipsticks
  7. Sofa
The 3 main props which were used, were the hairbrushes, Lipsticks and also the Huge mirror in the bathroom.
The lipsticks and hairbrushes were used to simply to loom sexier and prettier, as well as gaining self confidence back again.
The Mirror was used by Dua Lipa, when she had drawn a love heart on the glass of the mirror, indicating that she misses her ex boyfriend. However, later on in the music video, she believes in herself and forgets about her previous relationship.

LIGHTING:
There is Highly lit lighting in the hotel room, and Low key lighting at only 2 parts of the music video. The lighting that looked really well was the natural lighting coming from the sun and sky, as soon as Dua and her friends were outdoors near the pool area. This depicts a change in mood.

COSTUMES:
The costume changes were very consistent and clever. Dua Lipa's friends all wore some sort of coloured, tight, short and revealing pieces of clothing... and then a coloured bikini near the pool area. Dua Lipa however, adopted the same look throughout the whole music video with a bra and an open baggy shirt crossed over one shoulder, or a dress and an open baggy shirt crossed over one shoulder. There was one point where Dua Lipa and her friends all wore lightly colour shaded bath robes.

I absolutely adore this music video in all aspects and it is my favourite song to listen to and music video to watch. Out of 10, i would give it a solid 10 out of 10. I feel that the mise-en-scene was spot on. This is such an amazing music video, an has a very naturalistic and linear narrative which has been completed to such a high standard.

Here are some images from the music video itself...

J-BALVIN, WILLY WILLIAM - MI GENTE - OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO. (ANALYSIS)

This song is my favourite song to listen to, since it had been released on YouTube. The main highlights of this music video would be the use of editing, but most importantly, the locations and on-screen performance. I had done some individual research on the meaning of this song, as it was sung in Spanish. This song is a collaboration between a Columbian singer, J Balvin, a French DJ, and the producer, Willy William. The track is a blend of Reggaeton, Electronic, Latin pop, and Afro-beat. (But is sung in Spanish)
The definition of "Mi Gente" is "My people".
The story behind this music video was a latino culture on the rise, getting ready to be accepted and embraced in the whole wide world. J Balvin wanted to achieve the goal of erasing barriers in terms of   continents, races, genres, colours, and languages. He had said in an interview with E! News that "We can achieve the whole world moving the head to the same beat. We hope "Mi Gente can prove that beat. Again, his aim is to become ONE (ONE= the world working together), and come together in fun and stylish manner.
The first 9 seconds of the music video just show a few of the main locations with the tune immediately dropping. J Balvin begins to sing dead on 9 seconds, initiating the groove and atmosphere. The music video starts off with a high angle / birds eye view shot of the city, Medellin, a city in Columbia. Eventually, a white person is shown, followed by a black person, then later on in the music video, many many people of different skin tones coming from different backgrounds and ethnicity's expressing their cultures how they have been brought up to. This instantly sets the scene and impacts the audience massively, on the seriousness and story of the music video. The various performances shown also highlight a mix of differences, uniting as ONE. I really think that this idea is amazing because it emphasises on that fact that we, as the audience are are going on a journey with the "people" by entering the city.

EDITING:
What really caught my eye was how they had managed to bring the 2D Orange still wall pattern to life constantly, from the beginning, to the end. (throughout) For example, the Orange pattern can be seen on the train tracks, moving left to right. (Direction of the train) This movement of direction could signify how masses of people and the community need to go towards the right path... Negative to Positive. It highlight's the importance of progression. Also the same pattern is seen moving left to right on a wall, and down to top on another wall, with an interval of approximately 3 seconds between the shots. Again, these are all hints to the audience on having a positive mind set, and to keep moving forward. At the very beginning of the music video, the words "Mi Gente" appear on the screen whilst there is a high angle / birds eye view shot of the city...showing "My People".

My most favourite aspect of the music video is the use of colour.
There is not 1 part of the music video where colour is not shown. With the help of colourisation, the reds, oranges, greens and blue's really stand out, and is very appealing to the eye. There is quite a contrast in colour between the first half of the music video in comparison to the second half. The first half focuses on a wide range of colours, ranging from bright tones to darker tones, with a vivid background, whereas in the second half, we see an introduction of a black background with the help of coloured smoke and neon lights to add the same party like celebratory feel to the atmosphere. At exactly 2 minutes and 3 seconds, an excellent example of colourisation had been shown. It was very vibrant and had an 80's 90's look to it. It really stood out as a wow factor.

The special effects in this music video were quite amazing and outstanding, as they are rarely seen in other music videos. The first kind of special effects I was able to point out was when the music video had started, instantly showing some sort of green and orange pattern building it's way up on the train track. I thought that this was a really vivid and eye-catching feature to include, as it provides the audience with a glimpse of what to expect in terms of visuals.
In my opinion, I believe that this particular pattern was used just to add some extra excitement to the music video. The shot straight after the initial shot had showed the city of Columbia... Medellin, but with a twist. It showed the landscape of the city, flipped up and flipped down. This could represent the past and the future of the city on how everything has turned around for the better.
Another special effect that I had spotted was the illuminated pink football goal posts. The entire frame of the goal was illuminated whilst the background was set at night. The illuminated frame of the goal could connote how there is an end "goal" that has to be met... bringing everyone together. Last but not least, my most favourite special effect out of the lot was the use of the freeze frame at the very end of a shot. All the people in the shot had become still figures (were in the middle of dancing at a club / party) and have had a major colourisation adjustment, providing an artistic, abstract and an almost comical look. Dark blue's, green's and red's were used, alongside a blurry effect, showing the contrast and deep lines... e.g. clothes and hair. These special effects definitely added more depth to the music video.

The pace and rhythm of the music video was really fast overall, but had varied between medium and fast. This is because when the main beat of the cymbal and the drums drop, the pace and rhythm both increase. From the first 35 seconds of the music video, the tune is introduced (medium speed rate) then at 36 seconds, the main beat drops, (fast speed rate) showing a beautiful lady twerking really, in sync with the beat. The use of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds were both affiliated with one another. An example of the pace and rhythm, alongside the on-screen actions would be at 1 minute 3 seconds of the music video. Here, the lyrics are "LA LA LA LA LA". There are 3 girls on each side of the black DJ, all shaking their upper part of their body (chest / breasts) left to right, to match each time the "LA" is said. This is done in quick succession. The pace was rapid as well as the rhythm, thanks to the great usage of the beat. The beat sounds really hard and is nicely blended in. Also, at 1 minute 7 seconds, the singer says 'FREEZE", where the girls immediately freeze their actions, but to an extent are moving sidewards in slow motion. Both of the aspects compliment each other.

The transitioning of the shots were absolutely fantastic. It gave the music video a huge boost in terms of visuals. Throughout the entire music video, we see many different and exquisite glitch effects each time the main beat drops. Whilst the beat is still on-going, we still get to see the glitches in between. At 36 seconds of the music video, we witness a major glitch transition effect where the screen is pixellated, almost as if a computer screen has been crashed. At 40 seconds of the music video we see a shot of a beautiful lady making a face, pulling her hair and pointing her finger to the camera... but in extremely quick and rapid motions, as there are a lot of flickering being shown on-screen. (going back and forth between shots) The flickering was a new and a neat transition to include between the shots.
The digital effects are the key highlights. The bright neon lights, the on-screen pixel crash, and the constant flickering of the shots during the beat are visually pleasing to the audience, and also compliment the overall intensity of the music video.

The shot duration and screen time were extremely fast, as 1 shot in this music video would last up to around 3 or 4 seconds long. This is because of the intensity of the music. It is quite fast, hence why there is a constant shot change almost every 2 to 3 seconds. Of course, J Balvin and Willy Willams get the most screen time as they are the main singers of the music video, but it could also be argued that the various "people" being showed on screen could have a larger presence. This is because J Balvin is trying to get across to many people, showing different cultures, races, and different ways of life. However, this ultimately comes down to the enjoyment factor where everyone is seen dancing and having a fun time. The shot durations and screen time are both very rapid, as each and every person is doing something that needs to be showcased on-screen.

There is a lot of performance shown in this music video. Both males and females are very energetic, always dancing and showing off different moves which go with the beat. African, hip, Spanish, Columbian, and sexy dance moves are all shown. All the dance moves are well choreographed and look very crisp and sharp, again, accommodating the beat. I really enjoyed by the dancing. Children and adults are both shown showcasing their dance moves. This signifies how dancing is in everyone's blood. Overall, the dancing was absolutely spectacular.

For the camera shots, almost every single camera shots were used. These shots consist of:

  1. Bird's eye view
  2. Extreme close ups
  3. Wide angle shots
  4. High angle shots
  5. Low angle shots
  6. Close ups
  7. Zoom effect
  8. Medium shots
  9. Long shots
  10. Deep focus shots
These shots worked very well, as they were taken in quick succession. The mid shots in particular were used mainly for J Balvin as he is the main singer of this song. The music is very upbeat, hence why the shots need to be quick but also flow accordingly. We see a long shot of people dressed in orange prisoner suits, each in their own balcony, looking out to the camera. This could signify that they want to escape, and also that captivation is wrong. A medium shot is showned with half a body of a black and white female, showing that we should mix and not look at each other in a disrespectful manner. The final shot is a freeze frame where the people on the dance floor are on a brick wall, implying that being together is concrete and firm.
Also, we see the wide and low angle shots more during the middle and the end of the music video and as the intensity and atmosphere increases each time, eventually leading to a halt at the very end.

The props used in this music video consists of:
  1. Glasses
  2. Jewellery
  3. Goal frame
  4. Smoke flare sticks
  5. Vintage car
  6. Festive and cultural decorations
  7. School bus
  8. Inside of a train
  9. Bike with wheels on fire
  10. DJ set
  11. Pineapple fruit barrels
These props were vital, as they add to the excitement and theme of the music video.

We witness natural lighting when the shots are taken outside, but we also see a light blue tint over these shots as well. Generally we see very highly lit lighting and also a little low key lighting towards the end.

The costumes for the 2 main singers change constantly over the corse of the music video. They wear a mix of casual clothes but mainly party like fancy clothes. The females wear a sexy and attractive outfit, which is either carnival like or from their home background. The kids wore fairly moderate clothing. Overall, the main concept

J Balvin had made this music video in response to president Donald Trump's decision to build a tall wall between Mexico and the USA to divide nations. Balvin disagrees with segregation and racism, and believes that people should be able to unite and not divide.

The music video was absolutely spectacular and amazing in all aspects. I really enjoyed it and also the meaning behind it. My favourite part of this music video are the amazing dance scenes. "Mi Gente" is fabulous.

Here are some images from the music video itself...

PARTY MONSTER - THE WEEKND - OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO. (ANALYSIS)

This music video is extremely effective and exciting, due to the advanced editing which has taken place throughout the entire music video.
The first 10 seconds of the video consist of various fast paced shots, beginning with Jesus' cross, the acceleration of a sports car wheel, the person behind the wheel, and then 3 to 4 shots of a "beautiful girl" alongside the main actor / singer.
Eventually, the car is parked up drifting in front of us as the artist, the name of the song and the director of the song are showed on screen in a green text. Also, the Weeknd is in a desert which points out that the he might be around the Las Vegas location as that is primarily known for hosting legal brothels.

EDITING:
The editing is extremely fast and rapid, which also indicates the speed of the sports car that "THE WEEKND" OWNS.
What really caught my eye at first was the use of "colourisation". We see a huge palette of colours ranging from bright red to midnight blue, indicating that the theme has got something to do with a party-like and rave atmosphere. The ENTIRE music video uses colourisation
and there is no visual imagery of a natural shot apart from the background of the drifting car. Colourisation plays an enormous part in this music video as the music is really upbeat, fast and rapid. The colourisation create a sense of emergancy and urgency about moving forwards, because the use of flashing lights alongside distortion highlights the importance of a vivid straightforward lifestyle. The colourisation effect signifies what "THE WEEKND" is trying to get across. The colour red is used heavily in the music video, which could realte to the lustful, sexual and energetic feeling of being in love with finding a girl who is ultimately the sex animal, the party godess and the drug taker. In otherwords, the "PARTY MONSTER".
The special effects are really vibrant and evident because we see various flashing lights, bright outlines of objects, illuminated backgrounds and also a demon like set of eyes on one of the girls the WEEKND is trying to go after. The special effects are vital for this music video as the theme is based on partying and love, it does make a lot of sense to include this so there is a higher level of realism and verisimilitude to the on screen actions. The special effects were the key attribute of this music video.

The pace and rhythm of the video is quite fast and quick. However, for the first 37 seconds of the video, it is quite slow as the scene is still to be set. After these important 37 seconds, the music video maintains a constant beat with a mix of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds, both intertwining with one another. The onscreen action is fast paced from the very beginning of the video to the very end of the video. The shots of the sports car wheel, the WEEKND driving the car, and the drift scene could connote how the rest of the music video will be based around that, in terms of speedy and quick cuts happening on screen. In my opinion, the sports car had set the scene for EVERYTHING in the music video to be sharp and straight to the point, allowing the audience to know just before the action starts. The rhythm is strong and harmonic, but eventually begins to die down when coming to the end of the music video.

The transitioning of the shots can be quite hard to observe, but the classic cut can be seen alongside some fades. However, the main types of transitioning is the digital effects. This particular effect includes colour replacement, animated effects, lighting effects and distortion. At exactly 1 minute and 27 seconds, we see a vague fade of a really bright white screen with a hand reaching out. This may have been used to compliment a change of the beat and tempo, subsequently expressing the characters mood.

Shot duration and screen time tend to tie in to one another in this video because a maximum typical longshot would get around 4 seconds. Due to the natural fast tempo, beat, rythm and atmosphere of the song, each shot tends to last about 1 or 2 seconds. The WEEKND gets the longest screentime, and  is followed up by the sexual girls and then the sports cars. This is the chronological order / importance of what should be put first wehn looking at screentime. We have the main character telling the story, followed by the reason, which is then followed by the speed at which his life is travelling at.

For the camera shots, almost every different type of shots were used. These shots consist of:
  1. High angle shots
  2. Low angle shots
  3. Slanted shots
  4. aerial shots
  5. Close up shots
  6. Long shots
  7. Medium shots
  8. Wide shots
  9. Extreme close up
  10. Zoom effect
All of these shots were used very quickly in the music video, and were incorporated really well in order to compliment the fiery approach and beat of the song. The close ups were shown for THE WEEKND. The mid shots were used everytime to intriduce a new location. Overall, there was no sequence of the shots, but they were all used constantly. The shots had definitely complimented the lyrics and the beat.

The props used in this music video consists of:
  1. A dark room
  2. Double bed
  3. large plasma screen tv
  4. The red cross
  5. Party Monster cake
  6. Sport cars
  7. Shiny silver necklace
  8. Black glasses
The props were a vital element to express THE WEEKNDS feelings and emotions.

Lighting is difficult to analyse as the ENTIRE music video is edited using extreme colourisation. Low key lighting can however be seen when coming towards the end of the video.

The costume for the WEEKND is all black with a leather jacket.
The costume for the females that he is after are not that easy to see, but the quick cuts and short scenes of them show that they are wearing a short revealing dress. (Attracting attention)

This music video was very heavy in editing for the Mise-En-Scene. I really enjoyed this music video, and it is definitely one of my favourite music videos.

Here are some images from the music video itself...
